"We Will Still Be Friends" by Akramul Haque ('18)
When I met Laura, she said she had always had vivid, richly dreams that she could easily remember. I can't remember the dreams that I have. Wait, I am lying. I do remember my dreams, but they are just here and there. I only remember the scary ones. One time, I had dreamt of killing a person. I wasn't myself, my eyes were on fire, my arms were very long and I had no legs. I could fly and also could disappear into thin air. I strangled the person, but I don't remember if it was a male or female. Creepy, I know, but don't we all have vivid and scary dreams? Well, that's what I used to think before I met Laura.
Laura changed everything I knew about dreams. She said, dreams are meaningful and she can make sense of them. I asked her how and she replied, “I dreamt of us having this conversation today.” I was surprised and I wanted to know if she was bluffing or she was really telling the truth.
Me: Okay, tell me what is the next thing I will ask you?
Laura: You will say, “That means you can see the future?”
She laughed and replied my question that I haven’t yet asked: “No I can't see the future, but I can dream about it.” I could not believe her. I kept telling myself she is very smart and knows how to manipulate people. But it did not take her very long to prove otherwise.
Me: Alright, so what is the difference dreaming and seeing the future?
Laura: You wouldn't understand because you can't remember or have a meaningful dream.
She had to be kidding me. I was furious and I had to ask her. I didn't want to be friends with her anymore.
Me: Tell me we are still going be friends after this conversation since you had a dream about it.
Laura: No. I am very unhappy that our friendship is going to end and I don’t have the power to change or do anything about it. I have no power over my future. But, I am telling you my secret because you are my best friend and I want you to be my best friend forever.
I could not understand what she was saying, but then I realized that she has been my friend for six months now, and she has never lied and was there for me all the time. She is my best friend and I want it to be that way. If she could not change the future, I can.
Me: Since, you don’t have the power to do anything about it, I will. I still want to be your friend and from now on we will change our future together.
