Caribbean Student Association and Cecile Maxi ('23)
We conducted an interview with Cecile Maxi who started an Caribbean Student Association club in SJC, learn more about the process of starting a club and how Cecile planed it out.
1. What inspired you to start a Caribbean Student Association (CSA)?
I’m an international student who for the past 3 years here at St Joseph’s College noticed that there were a lot of students who were either from the Caribbean or had a Caribbean background. As an ACES student, I had the chance to meet other students from all over the world but something was missing, I needed people to relate to and a space to do it in. As a result I created the Caribbean Student Association to help create a community here on campus. I want CSA to be a safe place for people to make friends and share their experiences. A place where people can find others from the Caribbean or learn about the culture of the Caribbean.
2. What are some events that the organization is planning to host?
We plan on hosting activities that are fun and informative such as panels, carnival day and many more. Our events will revolve around our culture, like the different genres of music, dance and language. We are co-hosting our first event at the end of the month on the 31st with the Residence Hall Association. Where we will feature films that honor Black voices. We want the members to learn more about their culture while engaging in fun activities.
3. What is the process of starting a new student organization at SJC?
Once you know what you want to do for a club, you have to find an advisor. It can be a faculty or staff member that will serve as a mentor and coordinator. You have to submit a form of engagement, then the members of SGA will contact you and invite you to a SGA meeting where you will be asked to talk about the goals of your club. The members of the different clubs will vote on it.
4. What is your role in CSA? Who is able to join the organization?
We haven’t had our official meeting yet. Currently I am the founder and president. The club is open to anyone who is from the Caribbean and anyone who’s interested in learning more about our culture.
5. Is it open to all students?
Yes! We invite all to join.
6. What is the goal of the organization?
Our goal is to educate, promote and share our diversity when it comes to language, culture, background and more.
7. What do you hope to gain from this experience?
CSA is really important to me, I hope to develop a connection with the members but also build a legacy here at St. Joseph’s. I want the organization to perpetuate over the years. From this experience I also hope to increase my leadership skills.
