5 Tips for First-Generation College Students by Ekram Alrowmeim

1.     Embrace who you are and where you come from.

Remember the saying, “The only person you should try to be better than is who you were yesterday.” Therefore, trust yourself and your abilities and NEVER compare yourself to others. You don’t have to come from a family that is full of college graduates in in order to be a good college student.

2.     Surround yourself with highly-motivated students.

Don’t expect to do well in your classes if you are surrounded by people who don’t care about their academic success. Surround yourself with partners who push you to learn more and do your best.

3.     Explore the academic support resources early on

As a first generation college student, the biggest challenge you will face is the lack of family experience with college life and the struggles that you may face. So, be a smart student and take advantage of all that your campus offers in terms of academic resources. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take your time and go to tutoring if you are having trouble.

4.     Get involved on Campus.

Try to be an active student and get involved in the different student organizations and clubs on campus. Joining clubs and organization will help you make new friends and learn more about your interests. Also, the networks and friendships will make your college life much easier.

5.     Be proud of yourself

Being the first in the family to make it to college is not easy at all, be proud of yourself.
